ILR guide
The English requirement
Most applicants aged 18 to 64 must prove they can speak and understand English, as well as passing the Life in the UK test.
If you apply for ILR on or after 26 March 2027, the level rises from B1 to B2 on these routes: Skilled Worker / Health and Care Worker, Global Talent, Innovator Founder, UK Ancestry — and several other work routes. If you are eligible before that date, applying earlier means B1 is enough.
Level needed today
You need English at level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) in speaking and listening.
How to prove it
- Pass a Secure English Language Test (SELT) at the right level from an approved provider, or
- Have a degree that was taught or researched in English (you may need confirmation from Ecctis if it is from outside the UK), or
- Be a national of a majority English-speaking country.
If you already proved English at the right level for an earlier application, you may be able to rely on it — check the guidance for your route.
Who is exempt
- People under 18 or aged 65 and over.
- People with a long-term physical or mental condition that prevents them from meeting it.
- Some people applying as victims of domestic abuse, bereaved partners, or refugees.
